Chatbot or AI Agent: The Difference for a Business

Both use AI to understand requests. The difference is what happens next: a chatbot answers, an agent carries out a task. The right choice depends on the work, not the technology.

The words chatbot and agent are often used as if they mean the same thing. For a business deciding what to automate, the difference matters.

A Chatbot Answers

A chatbot holds a conversation. It can answer questions from a set of information and hand the conversation to a person. The work itself still happens elsewhere. That makes a chatbot simple and low-risk, but limited to conversation.

An Agent Carries Out a Task

An agent reads a request, looks up what it needs, takes the allowed next steps and reports what it did. It can check a record, prepare a reply, update a spreadsheet or file a document.

Choosing Between Them

  • If people mainly need answers, a chatbot or AI secretary may be enough
  • If your team spends time gathering information and doing the same steps, an agent may help more
  • Either way, decide first what must stay with a person

Keep People in Charge

Our agents do the work; a human approves anything that reaches a customer or a prospect. Irreversible actions need a human approval; if no approval arrives, nothing happens. The more an agent can do, the clearer these limits need to be.
